Secretary General of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe Andreas Kiefer attended a modular camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kharkiv.
European visitors were interested in getting acquainted with the way people live there also from a practical point of view, informed the press service of the City Council.
“It was very important for us to see how Kharkiv copes with IDPs, how here help the people who have found themselves in the hot seat. After all, European countries are also faced with the serious problem of refugees from Syria and Iran, and we see that the principle of solidarity in the European Union is not working. Some countries refuse to host the IDPs. And Kharkiv supports people, we are even surprised,” emphasized Andreas Kiefer.
He appreciated the efforts of local and state authorities, as well as volunteers and charitable organizations that help internally displaced persons.
In turn, the deputy of Kharkiv mayor Svetlana Gorbunova-Ruban informed that now Europeans come to adopt experience of Kharkiv.
“A great part of our conversation with Secretary General of the Congress we devoted sharing experiences, answering questions about how Kharkiv manages in this issue,” noticed vice-mayor.
